Which version of DevMath should I use?

There are two versions of DevMath: "standard" and with "pre-assessments". Which version you use depends on your preferences as an instructor and the goals of your particular course.


Standard Version

The standard version provides flexibility to fit an instructor-paced teaching model.

In the standard version shown above, the instructor has direct access to all the teaching materials.  Using features of the institution's own LMS, the instructor can hide, display, rearrange or delete any content (please refer to our best practices article for important tips on customizing courses). Student access can be controlled via LMS features such as, for example, allowing access to the next unit only if the student has achieved a certain score on a test for the previous unit.

Pre-Assessment Version

The pre-assessment version contains the same content. However, it is designed with a personalized learning approach. The student takes a "pre-assessment" at the beginning of each unit, and is thereafter presented with only the material s/he has not mastered.

The layout of the course in the LMS is also different. The instructor does not have access to all of the topics individually. Instead, all of the content from Lessons and Topics are grouped together under one link: the "Unit Map". This may appear in your course as "Unit X: Begin Here" (default) or it may be labeled differently if the course has been customized.

After taking the pre-assessment, each student will see something different in My Learning Path. Each student's learning path is laid out individually, based on their scores on Topics in the pre-assessment. 

The instructor can control which Topics are available to students in the Unit Map (which by default shows all content, even if the student mastered it). The settings are located in the NROC Course Manager -- an external system for viewing student data -- rather than in the institution's LMS. Password-protected instructor access to the Course Manager is conveniently located within the course, via the "Course Management and Reporting" link (in the Instructor Resources section of the course in your LMS). Management of student grades is handled in part by the LMS (unit tests only) and the remainder is in the NROC Course Manager, which houses a great deal of grade and time-based data for each student. More information here.

Each instructor will need to decide which course to use based on instruction style and the needs and goals of the institution.
