Student: Getting Started/Instructions

Getting Started

The final activity of the unit is the Writing Center, where the student follows a guided process to write an essay. The student begins by clicking on the Writing Center link on the Unit Home screen.

The first thing the student will see, both now and at the beginning of each stage, is the Instructions overlay. Many misunderstandings about the workflow can be avoided by having students read the instructions carefully.

Students can revisit the instructions by clicking the Instructions button at the top of the screen (shown below). Likewise, the Resources and My Journal links are available at the top of the screen at all times.

Student: First Draft

To begin the essay, the student sees the Writing Assignment on the right sidebar with detailed instructions. The student types in the scaffolded fields to create their essay. The student must fill in all required fields before the Submit button will activate.

Note the prompt next to the Submit button. Students should be advised to check the prompt if the Submit button is not active. The prompt will always explain what must be done before they can submit their work.

Student: Writing Workshop 1

Immediately after submitting the First Draft, the student sees the Writing Workshop 1 video, which explains how to review and revise their own writing in the context of the particular unit/assignment. After watching the video, the student clicks on “Continue” to proceed to the First Draft Review stage.

Student: Second Draft Student can see the Second Draft but should not make changes until all reviews are complete. Student cannot submit until all Reviews (instructor and peer) are complete.

After submitting the First Draft Self Review, the student is taken to the Second Draft stage.

The student can now respond to (like/dismiss) their own self-review comments on the First Draft. If instructor or peer reviews are pending, the student cannot click Submit until they are all complete.

Student: Final Grade and Comments

When the Final Review and Grade have been submitted by the teacher, the student will see a status message in the yellow Writing Center Notifications sidebar on the Unit Home screen.

The student can see their final review (instructor) comments and final grade by clicking on the "Click here to review your grade" link in the Writing Center Notifications sidebar. Note that while other notification links disappear after the student engages with them, this one remains constant.

After clicking on "Click here to view your grade," the student sees their essay, the instructor's final review comments, and their grade at the top right. The grade can be in any format (letters or numbers). Download and print options are available at the bottom left. The Back button returns the student to the Unit Home screen.

NOTE: At this stage, clicking on the completed (check-marked) Writing Center activity link on the Home screen sometimes causes confusion for students. This link returns the student to the Writing Center where they can review their entire essay activity history (all drafts and comments). They cannot see the final grade and comments in the activity area.
